Vegetarian Nutrition - Wheatgrass Health Benefits & Nutrition at a Glance
By Alex D. Hammond
Wheatgrass is the young grass of the wheat plant that is harvested at it’s nutritional peak, which is between 7 and 8 inches tall. It has been, and continue to be more than ever, a popular vitamin-packed nutritional juice supplement. Many people claim that wheatgrass has healing properties, can protect against and even cure certain diseases, increase energy, break down free radicals, and supplement your body with valuable juice vitamins and other healthy nutrients. Although some of these claims are unfounded, there are many that carry some weight and are proven.
What’s in Wheatgrass?
Here are just some of the elements Wheatgrass holds and what they can do for you:
- Chlorophyll, which is considered a blood-building food
- Vitamin A, which assist in vision and skin health
- Vitamin C, which helps build your immune system
- Vitamin B-12, which helps nerves function properly
- Vitamin D, which helps bones remain strong
- Magnesium, which helps the body to absorb potassium and calcium
- Iron, which helps increase energy due to increased oxygen delivery to tissues
Forms of Wheatgrass Supplements:
- Wheatgrass Juice (Fresh) - The most popular way to consume wheatgrass. You can often buy fresh juice at vegetarian nutrition stores or juice bars.
- Wheatgrass Juice (Packaged) - A less effective way to reap the benefits of wheatgrass, but a great way to store the power-drink and have access to it on demand.
- Wheatgrass Pills/Tablets - A nutritional supplement often sold at nutrition and health food stores.
- Wheatgrass Powder - (To mix into a drink.) A good way to preserve many of the nutritional juice benefits of wheatgrass long term.
